False Lashes was inspired the dramatic serial shows such as Desperate Housewives, Dallas, and Dynasty. With a modern update, this story explores how young women try to follow their dreams but are used and sabotaged by the men in their lives. After an attempted murder-suicide, a young woman must return to the polygamist community she escaped to make life and death decisions for her parents and the future of her autistic brother.

The inspiration for this story came as I was on a long road trip through Colorado and Utah. As I rode along the highways I could see run-down farms, many with multiple small homes, some set up in a circle. I began to think about the young girls that must live in these compounds and what their lives might be like. My research revealed that child marriage is allowed in forty-four of the United States and that in polygamist families it is common for men to marry girls as young as fourteen. While polygamy is illegal is most states, there are many communities that turn the other cheek to the crime. I was motivated to create a character that could be bold and rise above the life her culture expected from her. Birdie is a young woman who took a big risk to escape the only home she knew, only to be called back when her father shoots her mother and then himself.
